Owing to the fact that I keep finding even more Batton relatives, I have attempted to tidy up the files again. I've put new links on the page (right hand menu).

1911 Census - Where are the Battons?

BATTON'S ON THE 1911 SCOTTISH CENSUS:

I couldn't resist checking to see where they were in the 1911 Census released yesterday. Email me if you would like a copy of the census record.

My great great grandfather Andrew Batton was still living in Galston at 21 Ironwork Square with his wife Lilias - both were now 53 years old. Living with them are their sons John Batton age 16 and Robert Batton age 9.

John would move to New York with his wife Sarah in 1929.

Andrew, Lilias and Robert would move to Douglas, Lanarkshire. So we know that in 1911 they are still living in Galston.

My great grandfather George Batton (31 years old), son of Andrew and Lilias is now living in Coylton, South Ayrshire, at 3 Kerse Row. Living with him is his wife Maggie (34) and their children Lily (7), Isabella (6), Andrew (5), Lizzie (2) and nephew John Queen, aged 8 years.

In the house next door, living at number 4 Kerse Row, is George's younger brother Peter McGregor Batton (29 years) and his wife Barbara with their 2 children, Lizzie Batton (4) and Andrew Batton (2).

Another chapter in the book.

Found the missing link

Thought I'd share with you that I have, at long last, found that missing link back to John Batton and Jessie Steel. I noticed the other day that someone had saved the 1910 US Census to my family tree page on ancestry.com so I checked to see the names appearing on this census. It turned out to be the census relating to George Batton and his wife Anna Armstrong. George was the son of John Batton and his wife Jessie. John Batton was the brother of our relatives Andrew Batton, Samuel Paton (Batton), Ellen Gordon ms Batton and George Paton (Batton). I checked to see what this persons connection with the Batton family was and found a lady named Dorothy Forcina. She has messaged me to let me know that her grandmother was Margaret Batton, daughter of George Batton, grand-daughter of John Batton and great-grand-daughter of the patriach of the family GEORGE BATTON born 1807..... DOROTHY has photographs of the 3 Batton sisters - Margaret (her gran), Isabella and Lillian which were taken at her own wedding in the 1990's. Can't wait to see them. Note the names of the daughters, probably named after many of your ancestors...... Just when I thought I had the Batton booklet up to date and ready to convert again, I find yet another missing piece in the jigsaw. I'll pull together a note to show the family connections.

Connection with the Massey's

Well, after a couple of days off work and on the search of more family members, I struck lucky with my findings and I've laughed about it most of the day with my husband and the kids.

When I found the will of Alexander Massey and plugged the family info into ancestry.com it took me to Alexander's grandson, also named Alexander Massey - who was born in Saintfield in 1863 and moved to Manchester, Connecticut, USA in the 1880's.... I just kept plugging in the family information and merging into mine until I became rather alarmed that it had brought me full circle from my "home" town of Hamilton, Scotland to Saintfield Northern Ireland, over to the USA and here I was finding ancestors from Hamilton, Lanarkshire.

But the names were a bit TOO FAMILIAR to me. I couldn't help smile when I started seeing some "famous names" but I'll let you look at the names that appeared as I went back generation by generation from Alexander Massey!

The names on the left are my connection to Alexander Massey Snr (father in law of George Batton Snr who died in Newmilns, Ayrshire in September 1872 - ironically Alexander died in November 1872).

The names on the right are the connection with Alexander going back one generation at a time - either maternal or paternal connection.... and each time it explains the connection to me, Sandra Murray O:)
